The plan I think is to spread deaths out over a longer period of time. I read today that one of the scientists on from SAGE is saying that lockdown or the ridiculously named "circuit breaker" won't save lives at all. It'll just spread deaths out a bit over time.
Right at the start of this, plenty of scientists warned that going into any form of lockdown would mean we could never come out of it again because the virus would just flare up again and that is precisely what is happening. There are credible scientists who believe we will never be able to get back to any form of normal again but I think politicians won't allow that to happen. At some point we're going to have to bite the bullet and let this thing run its course and we royally f**ked up by not allowing that to happen during the summer when our hospitals were empty. Now we're seeing cases rising during the normal flu season and politicians need to answer for that bout of stupidity.
I've given up trying to predict what these idiots are going to do next. My best guess would be that they'll have us shackled until next summer but who knows.

People are also dying as a result of the ongoing mental health issues, magnified having their businesses and livelihoods snatched away at a moment's notice.
The fallout of the mental health crisis in this country for the next 20-30 years will make Covid look like a f**king walk in the park.
I'd have no issues with further restrictions if they were a means to an end....anything other than 'oh we'll shut down for a few weeks and see where we are then'. This is what it realistically amounts to just now. There is no end, just kicking the can down the road a bit.

What's the plan? How are they going to get out of this cycle in the absence of a vaccine? The 'world class track and trace system'? That was some laugh!!!
The government on both sides of the border have completely f**ked this up. They've had 7 months to come up with a strategy to live through and around this, have turned up nothing and now just resort to more lockdowns.

Plan B has to be to acknowledge that there's nothing we can do to stop this virus doing what it wants, when it wants.
We've had lockdowns, mask wearing, businesses closed, people locked at home, social distancing and yet cases still rise the second this thing gets into it's "season".
It's nothing to do with "selfish bastards not obeying the rules" either IMO. It's just a VERY contagious virus. The reason for the low deaths is that the lowest hanging fruit (80+) has already been hit (approx. 1.5% fatality rate) and almost nobody from the remaining population is now dying or needing hospital treatment. Where people are still dying or requiring intensive care, you'll still be seeing those with underlying conditions.
The big problem is the mentality. We are so used to being able to fix almost every problem which comes our way that we are struggling with the idea that this virus may be unfixable. I'm not including the genuine scientists who are trying to find a vaccine or to understand how the virus works. I'm talking about the fake scientists who simply f**k about with "human behaviours", the politicians who get moist just listening to them and the general population who don't know about any of this. We haven't found an effective curefor the common cold or the flu so what on earth makes people believe we're going to unearth a magical cure for this new flu virus overnight?
At some stage it'll sink in to them that you can have all the safety measures you like but the second you enter a supermarket or go indoors where other people are, you are going to see it come back.
We can't live in fear of this thing. IMO we need to just get on with life. People will die. It's inevitable and all the denial in the world won't stop it.

OK ill bite. So far there have already been 3.5 million people left with no income or support due to covid and job losses. It may be a political decision, and maybe it shouldn't be that way but the reality is, that's what's happening.
"some pain" in hospitality. I'm guessing you don't work in hospitality. There's currently more than some pain in the industry and it's getting worse by the day.
Any gains the industry has made in working conditions over the past years will be absolutely gone when any normality comes back as people will be absolutely desperate for work and will work for peanuts just to pay a gas bill.

People are being shafted already and the peak of unemployment and businesses closing hasn't hit yet. The set back will take years to fix in a best case scenario

    Two years of lockdown?
    That is absolutely insane?
In your fantasy world, who pays the mortgages and bills of the millions who will be out of work by then?
Who puts food on their tables?
What taxes need to go up and by how much to pay for all of this?
What do we do with cancer patients and dying kids?
What about those needing organ transplants?
What about the 200 people per day dying of diabetes?
What about all those lives? All to be discarded because of 70 UK deaths a day due to covid?
When your grand plan is done you'll have well over 1 million young graduates turfed out onto a destroyed emplyment market.
You are insane and fortunately nowhere near a position of responsibility as regards covid.

So outside of the 5 named areas, cafes can serve food and tea before 6pm but not after that time.

Yes it's unreasonable to err on the side of caution when the numbers of deaths and hospitalisations don't even begin to justify shutting down the economy.

To me the only figures that count are the number cases v the number of deaths. If the cases are going up, but only a few have died in the past week........ surely that’s a good thing?
If the number of cases are rising and only a few deaths, does the threat of further lockdowns make sense?
I’m all for protecting the vulnerable (I haven’t been able to see my mother since March due to only two nominated family members being permitted) but the rest of us should be looking at getting back to some kinda normalcy.

The answer is yes. People have been dieing way before covid 19 turned up.  The biggest risk factor for dieing is being old.
If and when "they" can provide true and accurate stats of people who have died of covid 19 ALONE, it will be a small figure.
Yes I'm being a smart arse, but if you ask a stupid question, you get a stupid answer.

That was just a media creation, give the nation a feelgood story to take their mind off the shit going on, or the fact those in power had used the situation as a power grab on human rights.
Plus, it reinforces the notion that the NHS is a charity. Load of bollocks, the NHS should be paid for by government through taxes, not from some old codger walking round his garden and allowing the media to make the old war comparison.
It's amazing so many people fell for it.

I'm not moaning about anything, merely expressing an opinion that the current restrictions and control measures being imposed in the West of Scotland are a nonsense.
I wouldn't worry if my family 'got struck' because I believe the disease is mild in the vast majority of the population. Who knows, it may have been through the house already and we've all been asymptomatic ?
The virus cannot now be 'eliminated'.  To the best of my knowledge this has only happened with one human virus, smallpox, and that took decades.
I'm with Oaksoft in that herd immunity is likely the best way to progress now. A covid vaccine won't be available for the general population any time soon.
'A wee bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing' but I would like to think I would know something about virology and epidemiology (the study of disease in populations) because I am vet.

    It's called risk.
I don't stop my family walking across the street even though there is a daily risk of them being killed by a bus.
If you want 100% guarantee of absolutely nobody dying then you're in the wrong game bud.
Yes, there's a risk of catching covid. Absolutely nobody is denying that. What we're saying is that the risk of death from it is too low to warrant the restrictions we are being placed under.
If we catch it, we catch it. If a loved one dies from it, then that would be very sad but that's what life is about I'm afraid. Life is risk.
