Stuart Dickson
It's bonkers to bring in a manager and to not allow him the scope to build his own management team. There's always a balance to be had and the right assistant can often be more important than the manager. Maybe Farrell is earning more as a taxi driver than St Mirren can afford to pay him. That might make sense of thethe quotes. I certainly hope it's not more boardroom interference
pozbaird
As others have suggested, surely to goodness at the interview stage, one of the major things Alex Rae would have talked about would have been his desire to bring in his own choice of assistant. Then the BoD would respond with how such a move would affect an overall budget pot the manager had to juggle with.
charlie
Long well as head of youth development has possibly the most important job (with relation to the future of the club) after Gilmour. His role is paramount and shouldn't be tampered with. As assistant the only certainty is the sack. Stay where he is and don't start f**king about with youth development. You'd certainly hope so especially since the Chairman stated at the AGM that appointments such as this one would be funded out of the overall playing budget. If it is the case though that the board are trying to force him to work with their choice for assistant and he's accepting that position then I would seriously have doubts about Alex Rae's suitability and ability to do the job. The appointment of an assistant will be one of the most important decisions any football manager makes. It's got to be someone with the right set of skills to support the manager in area's where he doesn't feel comfortable. It has to be someone he can trust. Someone he can put up with, as it's more than likely they'll travel on scouting missions together and it has to be someone who is on the same wavelength when it comes to footballing styles and on the way you line a team up on match day. Correct I look at our scummy neighbours and they have Andy Millen head of their youth development with experienced ex players taking the other teams. We have Longwell and young boys in ours Longwell does enough as it is

The choice is his and his alone on the assistant manager.
