andrew87 got a reaction from BuddieinEK in Viaplay Cup(League Cup) 2023/24
Think you’ll find the season started today. The fact the league cup starts in July doesn’t mean it’s less important than if it started in September. There are only two trophies we can hope to challenge for and we’ve potentially blown our chances in one on the first day of the season.

Can't believe a question is do you want to pay 30 quid as a one off to keep them out!!
Haven't season tickets already gone up £30 ?

We might have had lots of shoots on goal but part of a good performance is the quality of finishing. Incidentally Jak saw it differently from you too https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/19759584.jak-alnwick-pulls-no-punches-bleak-assessment-st-mirren-situation-amid-dire-run/
As for not having to beat these teams to make top 6, we didn’t win the recent games against them and we’re not top 6. Of course there aren’t teams we have a divine right to beat but if you don’t beat the teams around or below you in the league top 6 isn’t going to be possible. The 1 point we took off the top three would leave us struggling.
I fully recognise that under Robinson the performances, other than 45 minutes, against United have been dreadful but I don’t think we were world beaters under Jim. The difference is under Jim we were able to grind out results which we don’t look capable of at present

Clutching at straws with the anti Robbo posts... we were shite most of this season and this bollocks about 4th place was some mere second in time - we were in the hunt for top 6 in spite of some dire and woeful pre Robinson results. We were only in contention for top 6 because Aberdeen & Hibs played absolutely no where near there level - we didn't deserve it and we are where we are because we cannot defend and have zero intent going forward. This is not down to 1 manager and a handful of fixtures!!!!. Compared to last season this was a real disappointment and this goes back to the summer transfer window and our style of play when JG was in charge . Things haven't improved I grant you but it was not pretty this season loooong before Robbo arrived
🤷🤷🤷🤷

Some of the teams in the top 6 are only there because they beat us. -

Motherwell and Ross County are teams we need to beat at home to make top 6. We were crap against Motherwell. Not that they were much better but we were very lucky to be winning and their equaliser was well deserved even if it did need a gift from us. As for the Ross County game Alnwick opening criticised the team for how bad we were. We only got a draw in that game because of the saves Jak pulled off.
FWIW I think if Jim had stayed we wouldn’t have been great but we would have got a result from somewhere and scraped top 6. -

You have to wonder what conversation Robinson had with the board about the current squad and his expectations for the rest of this season before he got the job. Given our position at that point I find it hard to believe he would have said they weren’t good enough and he’d have to overhaul the squad.
Obviously I want Robinson to succeed as it means Saints are succeeding and part of me feels he should be given time to build his own team but another part of me is very sceptical about his ability to put together a decent team.

andrew87 got a reaction from eastlandssaint in Scott Brown as our new manager? Surely not?
All the chat about the trophies Brown (or any other candidate) have won is to an extent irrelevant. For every Mourinho or Wenger who did nothing as a player and were successful managers there’s a Neville brother who won everything going but were hopeless managers.
Likewise experience only counts so far. There are some rookies who excel such as Dalglish but probably far more that flounder like Gary Teale. I say probably because a lot of these guys never manage again and are forgotten about.
Appointing a manager is a roll of the dice and all we can do is narrow candidates down by what we think are important criteria then hope for the best. I believe their personal qualities and fit with the job are more important than trophies.
Personally I don’t want Brown as he’s mine and many other people’s most hated figure in Scottish football for the last 15 years. Some feel that his aggression, not taking any shit and generally willingness to get it up people are positive qualities. Maybe for a midfield hard man but not for a manager. There’s been plenty of times I think his conduct hasn’t been befitting of a club captain never mind manager. Maybe he’s matured but his reaction to getting Kent sent of recently did nothing to make me think so.
Incidentally if John Terry get linked with the job you replace Brown’s name with his for most of the posts in this thread.

andrew87 got a reaction from Sweeper07 in Scott Brown as our new manager? Surely not?
You’re right that no team wins every trophy they enter but Celtic’s circumstances were probably unique during this period. They play in a country where there are two teams miles ahead of the others and had the luxury of their rival ending up in the lower leagues leaving no real opposition. Maybe winning every trophy was unfeasible as there’s always the chance of a shock over 90 minutes but they weren’t getting knocked out by strong Aberdeen, Hearts, Hibs or Dundee United sides. They were losing to the likes of us, Ross County, Killie and Morton. -

Agreed. Celtic should have won the treble every year Rangers were in the grubber but were regularly beaten by lesser teams. Not saying that was all Brown’s fault but if he’s going to be praised for winning the league then criticising him for their failure in cups and Europe is fair. -

Gerrard won one trophy in three years and that was only because a Celtic team, captained by Brown, imploded. -

As opposed to a player that loves losing and hate winning? Part of the Aberdeen coaching staff this season. How’s that gone so far? -
