bigjerseybuddie got a reaction from faraway saint in Sectarianism In Scotland
Sectarianism exists in many forms and in many societies. I have lived here for 30 years and have encountered sectarianism in a much more subtler form than the type I grew up in. Having been brought up in ibrox I witnessed more than my fair share of horrendous sectarianism. My parents were very much against religion as they saw it as a breeding ground for hatred. Of course that's not the case, but they naturally worried that we would get caught up in the lunacy. Religion, when properly practiced, is clearly a very positive and loving thing in many people's lives. It's the insane interpretations that lead to irrational fear manifesting in violence or more subtle forms of sectarianism. The church bodies have never taken enough responsibility in actively challenging sectarianism. They say oh yes it's terrible but they need to work closer together at a public level and demonstrate love and tolerance, and more importantly, common spiritual ground. Similar inertia from the clergy in northern Ireland not only prolonged the troubles but some clergy were actively involved. I suspect much of the same behaviour happens in Scotland

I think a lot hinges on how the player himself makes amends for his actions irrespective of what the court decides. He may have a drink problem, in which case he can get help. He hopefully sees how this will seriously jeopardise his future and bust his arse to make up for it in a way only him and his conscience can decide. I've been where he's at and thankfully all that stopped many years ago when I sobered up and people I had hurt were only too willing to help me when they saw I was genuine in my efforts. Our clubs track record is good when it comes to players in trouble( basher with drugs if I remember correctly) I know the big difference here is that he assaulted the police twice which will not go in his favour at all, however if he has a problem ( and doing an insane act twice may point towards that) then this is a big turning point for him and he either takes it seriously or he doesn't. Let's hope he does

A whole range of opinion on here on what should or shouldn't happen to Paul. Let's trust the management and board to do the right thing once the court has made it's decision. They will be the ones with all the facts at their disposal and they will then be able to make an objective decision.

If this is an example of the attitude of a serving Police officer, then God help us all.

Evidently you do, if you have made a profile specifically to come onto a message board and comment on it.
And RE: your earlier comment that he deserves a stint inside because of all the other neds like him - As a serving police officer, it isn't your job to judge him. That's a judge's job. It's your job to apprehend him. And for that reason, what you think he deserves is irrelevant.
He's made a mistake, a potentially disastrous one in terms of his career. By pleading guilty, he's accepted this. So should you.

A great service for a great man. As said before by Slash, my uncle Keith's speech was incredible. How he managed to get all those words out under the circumstances I'll never know.
Thank u to all that attended. It says it all about a person when so many nice people attend ur funeral. He was surrounded by good people throughout his life. Just a pity one of life's scumbags had to end it
We'll never forget him, now we must get JUSTICE for him

there was a thread quite a while ago about your first saints game. Well this may take some time, but it's time to write it. I grew up in ibrox with my 2 sisters and my older brother. The Richardson family also lived there. My brother was friends with Ferrier and I was friendly with Keith, young Simon was a few years younger and an extremely nice boy. We all went to the same school and attended the same BB company. We spent a long time in each others company, playing football or just hanging around on the local green. I don't know if their parents are still alive but they were very kind generous people who always gave you a sense that they really cared about all us boys. Sadly a lot of boys were influenced by the old firm but I can remember as if it was yesterday Keith saying to me that he supported St Mirren and would I like to go to a game. I went to my first game and was immediately sold on everything at Love Street. From that day Keith and I went to every game home and away, defiantly wearing our scarves walking to the bus stop at the top of Copland rd. After a few wonderful years Keith decided he was heading to London and unfortunately we haven't seen each other since, but I will always hold him in a special place as he was instrumental in saving me from old firm oblivion. Now back to young Simon, he was quite a bit younger than us but I remember he always came across as a gentle boy and when I saw his photo on the BBC he had inherited the strong family features. Simon came from a Family who worked hard and gave to others with an earthiness and sincerity very rarely seen these days. We have lost one of our own and may His memory be honoured in a way that he would want. I hope that this comes across in the way that it's meant. Simons family and friends are constantly in my thoughts and may your love for one another and the healing of time help you through. God bless you Simon

The St Mirren Fans Council decided recently to get a banner made to commemorate the club's famous League Cup win this year. It is on display tonight for the first time in the away end at the Scotland under-21 game and will be there again on Sunday for the Ross County game. Hopefully it is something that will serve as a lasting memento of a great occasion
