salmonbuddie
Holyrood has never run a deficit. it spends it's allowance every year or returns an underspend. Rules prevent it from borrowing money to fund other borrowing any borrowing they make must be subject to a strict repayment schedule we will see how things go if they start to borrow money in the same way as other governments do On the basis that your last para will only happen once we're independent again, bring it on! saintnextlifetime
But could the money not have been better spent? Like, you know, on some planes to stick on the aircraft carriers. How the f**k are we supposed to bomb the pesky natives of third world countries without they planes? No forward planning at all, f**king useless. Indeed , indeed , a decent sized bomber/strike aircraft , carrier borne of course , could have gave the UK the kind of military prestige not seen for over 30yrs !! We would have got much more kudos from our US , war waging , cousins . .
a50lennyc
Just think how many unarmed civilians we could have slaughtered if we had only a bit more foresight. What we really want is carrier-borne drones - then we really could go to town. We could maybe get them if we sold a few more premium bonds? (PS - note - this is also a stupid question... )

beyond our ken
I'm surprised you want to highlight this. It shows that despite falling oil prices the UK Government is still reducing the deficit in trying circumstances. In the meantime Holyrood's deficit continues to rise as the distance between the SNP projections of oil prices and reality continue to get ever wider. You mean that he falling oil price is not having a huge impact on our economy? Really? Who would have thought it?

Stuart Dickson
What I have found interesting over the last few days has been the never ending group of economists who have appeared on radio and TV to say that the UK will enjoy net growth thanks to the positive news that the price of oil has been falling so dramatically. Apparently the UK and the USA appear to be two of the biggest winners from the economic reality of falling oil prices whilst oil dependent economies like Russia, Iraq, and many others across the Middle East are facing growing concerns of huge job losses, and deflation in their economy. Interestingly Europe's delecate position has also left the global markets with concerns that it faces the horrendous prospect of deflation as well. Now just a few months ago the SNP were telling us that we should buy their picture of an Independent Scotland based on a hydrocarbon economy with high crude oil prices and they told us that the biggest threat to Scotland was the possibility of the UK breaking from the EU. It looks like Alex Salmond and his other pantry economists in his party called it all so wrong.
saintnextlifetime
As I said ... Your main problem is that you're so thick, you don't realise that you're thick. I believe , that in his own wee land , that he believes himself to be quite witty and droll . . Now , remember that it wouldn't really be fair to disabuse him of such an idea , as , it might be deemed as a wee bit cruel. .

Stuart Dickson
I'm quite sure that they countries (apart from Russia (possibly) and Iraq, and let's face it, it has bigger problems at the moment) won't be too worried as they all have Oil Funds that were set up for exactly this kind of scenario. Iraq, like Britain, squandered all the money, mainly on weapons and war in Iraq's case. If the fall is long term, which it probably won't be, then they might start having concerns. For the time being, they will just dip into the Oil Funds. How's Norway doing by the way? This is the one time that the selling of the oil to private companies is benefitting Britain as the country is only losing the % of tax on each barrel rather than the whole fall in price, like the countries with state oil companies. Over the years we have, of course, lost a hell of a lot more by doing so. You better hope that the price rises again soon or The City could be f**ked due to all the oil futures purchased at what would be far higher prices than the price per barrel just now. If you combine that with the bursting of the artificially high housing bubble in London at (possibly) about the same time then you might not be gloating so much about other peoples predictions. But, hey, that probably won't worry you as long as you can get your daily erection by slagging Salmond and the SNP. How's Norway doing you ask? Well their slashing their economic forecast, cutting interest rates to a record low and they are issuing forecasts warning of a huge economic downturn. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2014-12-11/-severe-downturn-threatening-norway-central-bank-governor-says.html It could have been Scotland, fortunately 55% of Scots saw through the bullshit and called it right. The UK economy continues to be one of the fastest growing in the world, one of the most diverse in the world, and one of the most robust in the world. Thank Christ for the 55%
Stuart Dickson
Pity they couldn't have told folk this was in the pipeline a couple of months ago. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-north-east-orkney-shetland-30434422 You are joking right? Stuart Dickson
Totally predictable. I never knew how they were doing and couldn't be arsed to look it up but I knew that, with just a wee nudge, you would find me something to slap you round the back of the head with. You can't just selectively quote articles and then exaggerate what they actually say without expecting someone to do what you don't do and read the full article (and understand it). So, they're still expecting a 1.5% growth in the economy next year and “It’s now clear that Norges Bank wants to be ahead of the curve and proactive in response to the expectations of weaker growth”, unlike our own situation where we wait for the shit to hit the fan and then react and try and do something about it. Maybe I missed it but I never saw mention of a "record" low interest rate in that article or a "huge" economic downturn. The actions they are taking is to prevent a slowdown turning into a downturn. Considering that this is a global financial f**kup we are in then it seems that they are doing not too bad. You really do have trouble reading a full article, don't you? You did see the mention to the $860bn Oil Fund didn't you? How much does the UK Oil Fund have in it? Where the f**k is our "rainy day fund"? Norways f**ked - http://af.reuters.com/article/energyOilNews/idAFL6N0TO1F920141204 UK set for strong growth - http://uk.reuters.com/article/2014/12/10/uk-britain-economy-bcc-idUKKBN0JO00520141210 Adam Smith Chair of Political Economy's verdict on SNP pre referendum predictions on the economy - http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/oil-prices-plummet-leading-academic-4800452 As i said - thank f**k for the 55% of Scots who actually had a brain. Stuart Dickson
The SNP have just had some great news in their quest for total control of Scotland. Scottish Labour have introduced Murphy's law. (If it can go more wrong, we will go more right!) I don't think it's that bad an appointment. Scottish Labour clearly have a dearth of talent but then that's pretty much a common problem at Holyrood which is basically the Conference League of politics. I think Labour have learned from the mistakes of their past though. The more left the party goes, the more inept they look, the more voters don't trust them, and the more unelectable they are. We see the same trend whether you want to look at Michael Foot, Neil Kinnock, or the current cluster f**k that has Ed Milliband struggling for credibility anywhere in the country. The irony is the SNP have also learned from Labours mistakes from the past and despite their socialist rhetoric, pretty much all of the policies they've managed to carry though Holyrood could have come from a UKIP manifesto. Guest TPAFKATS
Jim Murphy's appointment has been celebrated by tories red and blue across Scotland. I would guess the tories who backed his campaign financially will be most happy. Labour have lost their heartlands in Scotland due to abandoning the socialist principles they were founded on - they now decide (via their bizarre convoluted voting system where some people have 3 votes) that the best solution to this is to elect a leader who is more of a NeoCon that many Tories. Armando Ianucci couldn't make this shite up...
