Does anyone know Also what are behind all the other nicknames Saints players have had... there must be a few belters! One player at a time please

homerj
I was just talking to my dad about this the other day, he said the nickname was taken from the war film "The Cockleshell Heroes" that was out arround the time he signed for St Mirren after serving in the army. buddiecat
Think your right , the family were originally from the Ayrshire coast ! I met and trained with the same football team as his nephew - who I believe was from ardrossan, can only remember his nickname ( celts ) no idea why he had this nickname. After a football club dance during which he punched my mate and I gave him a swift kick in the knackers for doing so, I never saw him again. My younger brother was mates with young John Wilson, the family lived in the street behind us in Glenburn, maybe he could tell us why "cockles"
