Nicola Sturgeon has backed away from her threat to hold a new independence referendum this year as a new poll showed support for leaving the UK had fallen to its lowest level in 18 months. Yeah that's all a bit disappointing, I blame it mostly on the way Sturgeon mishandled the the Salmond affair - I'm still confident at worst we'll be Separate by 28. As long as Tory hegemony at Westminster continues it's just a matter of time - even though people get more conservative as they get older I still reckon demographics are on our side too. Tactically I expect a pro-Independence majority at Holyrood next week to call for a second referendum within the timescale of the next Scottish Parliament followed by Johnson blocking all moves towards IndyRef2 which will be counterproductive. If Johnson had the balls for it I reckon his best move would be to agree to an early second referendum which really would derail any further moves for independence for 20 years if NO won. The most damaging outcome for independence would be Alba getting 5-10 seats and the toxicity surrounding Alex Salmond leading to a loss of focus, which is a pity because a left-wing pro-Independence party standing on the lists only is a good idea. Slavering - at least I'm not frightened about the future. ************* Oh and @windae cleaner the SNP republican - if only! No possible outcome of any election has even remotely made me frightened. The continued union gives me hope the future is bright, certainly for people who want it to be. It seems the Bravehearts are the one's who are frightened/running scared. As for the slaverers, they can slink into their dark places and think of something else to drag everyone else down with. However, I do believe that his leadership will see an increase in the labour vote. It's a pity for Labour that they couldn't find someone in Scotland, even approaching the presence of Starmer, who has impressed me so far. Although, to be fair, for the leader of the opposition, it's like taking candy from a clown at Westminster of late. Unfortunately, the pool of competent politicians in the UK in all parties is sadly lacking. Nicola Sturgeon will go eventually and, at present, there's no clear successor. Which must be a worry for the SNP.

Cumbriansaint72
From down here Labour need to start making inroads as shockingly most of Cumbria turned blue last gen election😯, for me I would rather stick pins in my eyes than vote that way. The poll tax did it for me being chased for 87p some things you don't forget. It's rather a better situ to have up north imo. In saying that my dad is still as SNP through and through as he was years ago in paisley, keep having to remind him there isn't much call for them in cumbria 😂😂

"Sir" anything in charge of the Labour Party, think about that for a minute. The original Labour Party Keir will be spinning in his grave.Sarwar in Scotland, the millionaire whose family don't pay their workers minimum wage. Wonder if they think he's "bright and personable"? Never mind, I'm sure he has the founding values of Labour at his core and sending his children to private school is a reflection of those values. oaksoft
Thinking about all of this, has there ever been a time in living memory where the quality of politicians to choose from has been so dire? Other than Sturgeon, there isn't a single leader of any other major party worth a button. Maybe Patrick Harvie would escape that criticism but that's it. Then you add in Trump, Biden, Macron, Putin and that prick in charge of Brazil to the mix globally. Then chuck in a pandemic and these were/are the people we have trying to fix it all. It's all pretty depressing if you let it get to you. If there's been a time where we've had worse politicians than this lot then I'm all ears. Will be interesting to see what turnout we get next week. I expect it to be low. Edited April 30, 2021 by oaksoft

No I'd prefer it if everyone was paid a fair wage, and in the case of Sarwar's company not an illegal & unfair one. 2. It's a fair POV but you can't hold it and say you believe in levelling up society - which is the charge levelled against Sarwar, who is the leader of a political party that is, the last time I looked, notionally Socialist. I'll vote SNP (constituency) & Green (List) next week - I'd vote Green at Constituency level too if they had a chance of winning. You worry enough to comment about it and complain about policies that might cost you money but would arguably be a benefit to society as a whole like free broadband. The knighthood entitles him to be styled as "Sir Keir Starmer"; however, he prefers that people do not use the title "Sir". think about that for a minute. The original Labour Party Keir will be spinning in his grave. You mean this (racist) guy? Keir Hardie, in his evidence to the 1899 House of Commons Select Committee on emigration and immigration, argued that the Scots resented immigrants greatly and that they would want a total immigration ban. When it was pointed out to him that more people left Scotland than entered it, he replied, "It would be much better for Scotland if those 1,500 were compelled to remain there and let the foreigners be kept out... Dr Johnson said God made Scotland for Scotchmen, and I would keep it so." According to Hardie, the Lithuanian migrant workers in the mining industry had "filthy habits", they lived off "garlic and oil", and they were carriers of "the Black Death".[26] In 1908, when visiting South Africa, he said the Socialist movement stood for equal rights for every race but that "we do not say all races are equal; no one dreams of doing that" Sarwar in Scotland, the millionaire whose family don't pay their workers minimum wage. What's wrong with free bikes for poor kids? A huge step forward in social fairness and a great incentive towards living a healthy life-keeping some cars from doing the meaningless school run to boot. It's a great idea. To argue against free access to the internet, greatest benefit of which will be to connect poorer families up to a wealth of information and support, would be the same as arguing against free books for schoolchildren and free libraries when they were the main access route to life-changing information and education. The modern world is moving fast and it is right that we take steps to make sure that poorer kids don't get left behind.
