I noticed Baird as well. Stepping out when needed, seeing danger and covering, winning the ball in the air. People forget he himself only turned 20 at the weekend.
Kelly stepped in perfectly when Webster went off, and along with Baird performed well.
The thing I was impressed with, especially in the first half, was the way we pressed. We weren't just jockeying, but were snapping into tackles, which made QOS rush their passing which meant they were giving it away more often. Even the keeper was being closed down really well, leading to him slicing a number of kickouts and looking quite nervous on numerous occasions.
We slacked off a bit in the second half, which is understandable given the effort we put in in the first half to get the upper hand.
Delighted with the attitude shown under Rae, and happy with the experience we've brought in. All players we've brought in are experienced and physically strong, which makes a big difference - especially with Goodwin out.

I think we pressed really well today, I was surprised by the amount of balls both clarkson and Shankland won whilst their defenders dawdled on the ball. It was an insight into being a fan watching his team play saints for the last few years

Another win. 4 points off play offs. A clean sheet & getting into the winning mentality. A R is doing the business. Really hope we can repeat the feat next week again.
    Confidence &belief growing!!!!
Weekends are a bit better recently.

Davy Clarkson is a good signing he can hold the ball up and score goals!
Just need to improve in the midfield so we can give him the service to score goals!
As for Thommo he's had a good career earned stupid money at Rangers went on to play for Scotland and played in the English premiership. Then had successful career in English championship playing for the biggest teams in the English championship before moving to his boyhood heros and winning the cup!
If Clarkson's arrival means Thommo's departure I don't feel sorry for Thommo disapointed for the way his career at St.Mirren had petered out in the last 2 seasons!
Tommy Craig overplayed him and rushed him back and rushed him back again and he never quite recovered!
Always will be a St.Mirren Legend his celebration in the final after his goal is probably my favourite St.Mirren moment ever!!

I disagree I don't think positional sense can be coached a player either has it or they don't. He scored against Morton and against Dumbarton iirc where he latched on to a bad back pass, therefore I think he has it, he also looks to be fairly composed in front of goal. But as you allude it's all about opinions

Shankland is a goal scorer, and we would do well to hang onto him. Its a low risk option while he remains contracted to another club, and won't be costing us the earth.
Let's face it, not one of our players shone under Murray, so perhaps should not be prematurely judged on their showings while he was the manager (albeit I'm not suggesting that they should be absolved of all responsibility).
I would be fine with Shankland staying on.

Isma was inspiring? Give me a break, you hadn't the first idea who he was before he signed. Neither had any of us.
Our last 'inspiring' signings were Thommo and Teale. Both of whom effectively knocked on the door and asked for a contract.
It hasn't happened since and it probably won't again.

No point in targeting certain players. Our team as a whole is spineless and lacks any leadership, i expect Rae to instill these qualities, given time.

    This thread ???
    'Thinks' .............................. Lunatics and Asylum.
Lennon and MacPherson were incompetents and both of them deserved to be relieved of their duties at SMP.
The members of our current Board, several of whom courageously stepped forward in St Mirren's hour of need (effectively our hour of potential obliteration), and saved us from extinction by the asset stripper Reg Brearley should forever deserve our thanks. Thank you !!!
But since then this Board's record in appointing team managers has been unforgivably bad. Perhaps the short-term success we witnessed under Tom Hendrie 15 years ago would could be regarded as the sole exception but even Tom's time in charge imploded in the end. Even the amazing league cup success in 2013 under DL turned out to be a false dawn, nothing but a flash in the pan.
Ultimately this Board's strategy in selecting replacement managers has been flawed and the loyal St Mirren fans have suffered the consequences of their penny-pinching short-sightedness. Now that Ian Murray has (honourably) quit his post the BoD must get their act together and appoint the right person in the hot seat regardless of the short-term cost. Too much consideration of "well let's take the easy / cheap option as we will be selling up soon" has gone into the appointment of managers in the past. The cheapest option has been the preferred option every time.
So, moving forward, NOT ALEX MILLAR !!!!
The BoD have to wake up and think adventurously. They have to spend whatever is necessary to bring in the right person otherwise our spiral down the league structure will continue.
    NOT THE CHEAPEST OPTION !!!

Horrendous result yesterday, but we have to allow Miller time to assess what he has at his disposal and a system to suit the players, it's only been a week. For me it's time for Thompson to take a seat, Shankland and Gallagher to try and forge a partnership.
Although Thompson is solid up top no one is running off him and collecting the flick on's.

Welcome back Alex.Lets not forget the huge profit you made for Saints by signing Ian Ferguson for £60k and we got around £900k you can all do your own Maths and yes it was his side that won us the Scottish Cup no question.

.....Havng identified his successor, who went on to become a Saints legend. Pretty shrewd judgement I'd say. Not to mention the transfer fee that saved us by not having to sign a first team replacement.

This is bizarre, Alex Miller is exactly what we need. He is an experienced coach who has worked with world class players in his recent past. Let's not forget Liverpool won the Champions league whilst he was coaching there. I'm not suggesting it was solely down to him but he was part of the set up.
IIRC during his first term here we regularly finished in the top 4 and were in semi finals and finals of cups regularly. It could be argued it was his team who went on to win the Scottish cup in '87

Could it be the case that we are intending to bring in a director of football? It has worked at Hearts with Levein and Neilson.
Maybe some of the bigger names could be tempted by that role.

Goodwin is essential to our hopes. He has been absolutely magnificent this season in a struggling side. Murray should ne offering him an extension now. If he doesn't then there is a conspiracy. Jim did wrong before but you can't doubt his ability not his passion for our club. If others had the same determined approach we wouldn't have 2 wins from 11 and be languishing in.the second tier of Scottish football. Our club in a league like this struggling is a bloody disgrace
