First Team Squad

In the last issue of Black & White Stewart Gilmour said they were hoping to have a squad of 20 to 22 players.

At the moment it's at 16 - and that includes guys like Cuddihy and Morgan who have barely kicked a ball, although it doesn't include Wilks who will be a sub tomorrow. Based on that interview there could still be four players coming in

In all seriousness, if I walked past our current squad on the street wearing their jeans and a T Shirt, I reckon I'd recognise five of them tops.

Just for you my friend, here is the updated squad profiles with photos of the players. From the official site. Needed to do this in two posts.

Having watched the game yesterday and been impressed to a degree with the youngsters on show , we're still at least 4 first picks away from being able to compete at the right end of the table. I would imagine that Murray will be thinking along the same lines , I hope he is anyway , for our sake !

From the Daily Record on line...

How they rated: Scott McDermott's player ratings..

Mark Ridgers 8: Didn't do a lot wrong between the sticks for Saints. Produced two very good stops from Holt and Clark - and was so unlucky not to keep Shiels strike out. Handling was also good.

Jason Naismith 5: Had his hands full trying to keep on eye on McKay on his outside as well as covering in-field as Gers attacked down that side. Didn't get a break when Templeton came on.

Jack Baird 7: Teenage centre-back looks to be a real find for Ian Murray. Got booked in second half but made a couple of crucial blocks on Walsh and Waghorn which could have led to goals.

Sean Kelly 6: Developing as a centre-half after starting career as a left-back and was put under pressure here. Found it tough at the start as Gers bombarded them but settled more after break.

Luke Conlon 7: Former Burnley full-back handled Walsh well and rarely let the Rangers winger beat him on his outside. Tried to get forward and team up with Howieson on that side to no avail.

**STAR MAN** Paul McMullan 8: St Mirren's best player. On loan Celtic kid has bags of potential and wasn't fazed by Ibrox atmosphere. Sublime pass to create Howieson's goal in first half then upended for penalty.

Stuart Carswell 5: Tried to be Buddies' anchor man in midfield but couldn't get on the ball often enough. Spent most of his time tracking Rangers' runners. Tough shift for him in there.

Cameron Howieson 6: New Zealand international started slowly on left wing but when presented with chance in front of goal he finished superbly. Faded again in second half and was hooked.

Stephen Mallan 5: In the side to be creative force for Saints but couldn't make an impact. He had one typically mazy run in the first half which required a Kiernan block but wasn't involved enough.

Scott Agnew 5: Grew up in the Ibrox youth ranks so was eager to impress as advanced midfielder for Murray's men. But was over-ran in there at times and set-piece delivery let him down at times.

Steven Thompson 4: Started OK but was soon bossed by Wilson and saw little of the ball. Didn't make it stick up top and his night was capped off by horrendous penalty which he blazed over.

SUBS:

Lewis Morgan 2: Replaced Howieson on 66 minutes but struggled to get into game.

Calum Gallagher 2: On for Thompson up front against old club but no chances.

Alan Gow 1: Came on for Mallan as Saints pushed for an equaliser late on.

NOT USED: Wilks, Goodwin, McLear, Cuddihy.

I'd say Webster, Goodwin, Gow (although shite), Thompson, Langfield, Agnew and Watson all provide quite decent levels of experience.

Add to that, Naismith and Kelly are in their third full seasons as first team members and Carswell has over 100 Premiership games under his belt.

The average age of the 21 guys listed is 24. Five of them are over 30. And that is including Gow, who I thought with a pre-season under his belt would be at least some use to us. I would like to see another two experienced players added. The games we have played so far we have been pushed, pulled and bullied all over the park. Anyway lets get full points today. COYS.
