This. Hamilton Accies and Motherwell are about 5 miles from Sellik Park, and Lanarkshire is a hotbed of choosing the green or blue side of the divide. Partick Thistle are in the same goddam' city as the 'OF'.
Being in the shadow of the Glasgow giants has fcuk-all to do with anything. We are a smallish club for sure, but Celtic and Rangers have hee-haw to do with us getting Jack Shit for McLean in comparison to Accies deals for their young talent.
St Mirren have no divine right to anything, but by Christ, watching Accies, Partick, St Johnstone, Dundee and Inverness making us look like the SPFLs poor relation on and off the park is heartbreaking.
The stadium move, the clearing of the debt, the modern facilities supposedly vital in attracting better players, the 2013 cup win, the unbroken years of top flight experience.... We should at least be where the fakes have worked hard to get to. We are fcuking ourselves up from within.

I actually agree with most of your points pozbaird.
I was not suggesting that being so close to Glasgow is the reason for our present state.
Yes the BoD did a good job in getting us on a level footing several years ago but it has turned out to be a missed opportunity when we failed to build on that situation.
Ever since, apart from the 2013 league cup triumph, (which was another failure to build on the success we had then) the impression coming from the BoD was to cut our cloth according to our means - which in the BoD's view was to be able to compete at a level below where we are at present.
Agreed we have no divine right to anything - but I was just making the point that based on our potential fanbase we should be competing in the top six.
There has been no ambition shown by the BoD to aspire to greater things which is why the depressing stadium at Greenhill Road has been designed for failure rather than success and why it has never been filled as pointed out by pod.
Perhaps if we were situated in Dingwall, rather than Paisley, our present plight could be looked on as success.

Yes we have been naive but what makes you think it's a lesson learned?
We have been a small-minded club for quite a considerable time when considering we have one of the biggest potential fan bases in Scotland - and don't give me the nonsense about being too close to Glasgow. Even Aberdeen and the Dundee teams sadly lose potential fans to the Old Firm.
Are we unique in Scotland in being forced into selling players at less than a quarter of their worth?
The more small minded we are, the more players of any ability will hold the club to ransom.

I thought young players of Kenny's ability had more ambition - after all he is joining a club that is out of both cups and has no chance of winning the league just like ourselves! I suppose the attraction of playing some lot from the Faroes or Malta in the Europa League qualifiers next July instead of going to Whitley Bay with us may just have swung it for him.
Seriously though, good luck to him, like the rest of us he probably thought 'where the hell is this club going?' and wanted out pronto.

An odd position to take, I would love to see him fire Aberdeen to the title at Celtic's expense.

    It's a real so
It's real sore one this. We are not good at negostations the figure in the clause should have been a lot higher.
Kenny is moving to a much bigger club than St Mirren who are at the opisite side of the league to us and will be able to double his wages easily. Reading between the lines in today's press McInnes seems surprised that Aberdeen could afford Kenny , in other words McInnes thought the figure to get Kenny would have been a lot higher.
Clearly we are not run properly when it comes to contracts, this should be given the up most attention within the club to get things improved as we have a lot more talent in youngsters coming through.
We should be selling at a higher price.
Investing on experienced players to compliment youngsters.
Maybe with luck get a winning formula with young and experience which might bring a wee bit more punters through the door.
At this time I feel gutted like everyone else. Makes me think we really are a shrunken club

The team will be relegated absolutely no doubt. Selling kenny has finished us. Being honest I'm fed up with st.mirren they are being run very poorly and we are sadly sliding towards another relegation and a decade in the lower leagues. I find the downsizing quite incredible. In Dec we needed to wheel and deal and now we have signed 2 let go 5. Our squad was paper thin already and now it's basically a starting 11. We're going down and to be honest we fully deserve to go down. Never have I witnessed a premier league team pay such little regard to their top flight status. A horrible management set up in may then another debacle in Dec/jan culminating in another cheap appointment. I'm f**king sick of this shit and I now need to step back and stop worrying about the team.and stop rushing like mad.to make away games. Nope I've been conned this year by the board but it won't happen again. If I wanted to watch a.youth team I would do so down the racecourse not pay a fortune following one every week.

Nail on the head there. But (at the risk of going off topic) I often wonder, are we a small parochial team because we believe that to be the case and that it always will be so? Do we, as a club and as fans, have a small team mentality, and is that what stops us growing?
Maybe we should look upon being close to Glasgow as an advantage rather than a disadvantage. We're situated in the most densely populated area of the country, and yes there's a great deal of completion, but surely we should be trying to market ourselves to people in the greater Glasgow area, or even further afield, who are turned off by the old firm (there must be some people). That's never going to happen when we're using slogans like "one town, one team" and "St Mirren is Paisley, and Paisley is St Mirren". Personally, although I was born in Paisley, I didn't grow up there so my reasons for supporting Saints have nothing to do with civic pride. Yet, it seems like the club are only marketing themselves to people who might wish to come to games because they're from Paisley - surely these people already are going to games.
As I'm typing this, I'm realising that I'm not even sure what I'm suggesting should be done, but maybe if we see ourselves as something bigger, then we might start to attract people from outwith Paisley, and even Renfrewshire. Accepting that we are small time will only lead to others accepting the same, and (to try and get back on topic) maybe we're seen as a soft touch in the transfer market for that reason.
(By the way, Original 59er, I'm not suggesting you in particular hold any of the above opinions!)

I have never asked The Board to get into debt nor do i want them to.I want them now to show some drive and ambition into getting realistic money for talents like Kenny
Christ even McInnes has admitted he thought the player was out his reach. We are talking about a Board that let us drift for seven weeks mid season without a permanent manager following the shocking appointment of Craig. Then they appoint a rookie manager(not his fault) with no experience on wheeling and dealing which is what Mr Gilmour wanted. What a farce.

A lot's been said about McLean's valuation and whether any club would have paid more than the peanuts we got from the Sheep. Release clause, gentleman's agreement, call it what you like, but when compared with what's being asked for and paid by other clubs for relatively untried players our contract negotiation skills look amateurish at best. Who agrees these deals at Saints?

Probably a lot of pundits would agree that Kenny McLean and Stuart Armstrong are of a similar calibre and ability.
According to reports today Dundee United have rejected an offer of £1.6 million for Armstrong and St Mirren have accepted an offer of £275,000 for McLean.
Irrespective of whether or not 'release clauses' were involved, the whole affair (from St Mirren's point of view) reeks of incompetence.

Confirmation that Dundee United have accepted offer from Celtic of over £2M for GMS and Armstrong.
Irrespective of any 'release clause' factor in McLean's departure from St Mirren for £0.275M, the BoD should hold their heads in shame at this despicable piece of business. Their incompetence is breathtaking and has made us the laughing stock of Scottish football.

It's really enough to make you very angry. The general consensus on pie and bovril is the exact same as in here. Other teams fans can't quite believe that he's gone for so little. One Dundee fan even commented that if Andreu is worth a million, Kenny is easily worth double. Hard to disagree with that, really.

Finally calmed down enough to comment 'rationally' on McLean being sold to Aberdeen for 275k. (275 f'king k!)
McLean was out of contract last season and as we offered him a better deal we would have been entitled to a development fee. No club wanted to pay the development fee and so McLean either had to sign our deal or force being frozen out the game.
Now we all hear about 'football' being a business these days so why the f'k would you allow one of your biggest assets to have a 'gentleman's handshake' allowing them to walk away for the square root of f'k all.
Don't get me wrong McLean deserves a chance at a bigger club, but when you see the amount of money being spent on some players of similar calibre, it's an absolute disgrace that he's went for such a small sum. Should have been anything between 500k-1M. Especially when he could be he difference between staying up or going down.
The BOD have once again shown that they are well past their sell by date.
    The Danny Lennon shambles
    The Tommy Craig shambles
    The take over shambles
    The Kenny McLean shambles
I predict the relegation shambles now. The sooner they leave the club now the better IMO.
