They have been built up from nothing. Everyone from the kit man through to David Villa has been put together from scratch. Naturally, they haven't been put together on the cheap. If the NFL set up a London franchise, they'll throw money at it too - but there currently is, like NYCFC,

It was built up from sheikh mansours pots of cash, built from nothing would be where there was no cash to begin with

Sheik Mansoor threw potloads of money at Man City - from a starting point of a club with lots of history, a large fanbase, an already decent squad, and a complete infrastructure.

Sheik Mansoor has also thrown potloads of money at NYCFC - but the fact is they have started from nothing.

If a group of guys who had no cash at all had started a footy team called NYCFC then it would truly have started from nothing.

I agree with Buddiecat. 'Built from nothing' suggests a dream and a commitment to try and make the dream a reality as far as you can knowing that lack of expertise and finance will make the dream very difficult to realise with no timescale being appropriate.

Throwing hundreds of millions at a project using teams of professionals and a fixed timescale is a commercial undertaking like building an office block. :)

Most of which normally start out as nothing :P

AFC Wimbledon would be a far better example of a team being formed from nothing than NYCFC.

Maybe the phrase 'built up from nothing' needs defining?

Nothing is as it says, if you apply it to 'building' a football club it would mean adverts in the newsagents/local free paper/online message board (BAWA wednesday night sevens are 'built up from nothing'). Then training at Donaldswood in between council employee checks, taking subs from the players to enable the hire of a pitch at the racecourse come saturday morning, then clubs first game.

Or....

It could mean, signing Frank Lampard at circa £200k per week and choosing to play with him in Manchester rather than the other club you built from nothing with a couple of hundred million. Then shipping the whole squad of millionaires you built from nothing to the hundred million complex you built from nothing across the world to play their first games.... I expect David Villa has paid his subs and takes his turn at the laundrette with the kit!
