The difficulty, as ever, is in interpreting the figures. that the number of cases is levelling out is good news but the re-introduction of lockdown is about how quickly the number of cases, then hospitalizations and finally deaths is driven down. The isn't any sign of a downturn in cases yet (see below). so how long are we happy to bounce along at an average of 3-400 deaths a day for? There is no doubt that the lockdown will drive down cases, hospitalizations and deaths quicker - the key factor IMO has got to be hospitalizations which is not mentioned in the Mail article but is up by 1926 on the week. As ever in another Mail article BJs priority is to shift the blame, no doubt frightened by his gammonite backbenchers & NFs rebranding his party as anti-lockdown - is anyone on the forum going to argue we follow the USs example cos they've been bouncing along at the same rate since the start of June? Quote Boris Johnson's 'fury' at dodgy data: Cabinet ally says the PM feels he was bounced into second coronavirus lockdown *********************** 🤣 PS - A quick perusal of the number of comments in The Mail shows it's readers are more interested in trashing the Sussex's Remembrance Day "photoshoot" (over 10k comments) than BJs latest attempt to shift the blame (446 comments) - you couldn't make it up! 🤣 ************************ The latest data Covid-19 in the UK Daily cases 20,572 -2,682 v last week In hospital 12,949 +1,926 v last week Daily deaths 156 -6 v last week Edited November 9, 2020 by Bud the Baker

Bud the Baker
More good news on the vaccine front with the Pfizer/BioNTech with their product effective on 90% of those tested and no safety concerns raised. Quote Pfizer believes it will be able to supply 50 million doses by the end of this year, and around 1.3 billion by the end of 2021.
Bud the Baker
Well this is apparently the last week any sorta Brexit trade deal can be done in time for our exit (apologies to @antrin) on Dec 31 and the new Potus is a keen advocate for the Good Friday Agreement and thus against BJs Internal Market bill - with old orange face gone Britain has little leverage with which to defend our plucky fishermen against those pesky froggies and is slowly making it's way to the back of the queue for the chlorinated chicken buffet that the US wants to provide us - it certainly is going to be an interesting few weeks for the financial markets. Nope, the Froggies were our our allies in 1917 - against the Boche. The French and President Macron are however the EU country most vocal in their opposition to the sorta fisheries deal the UK wants..... Quote Macron has publicly taken a hard line on fisheries, saying France would not accept any Brexit pact that “sacrifices our fishermen”. He rejected London’s demand for annual negotiations on fish quotas in British waters, saying it damages EU industry. You might find this Stewart Lee article from The Grauniad amusing... https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/12/of-course-theres-a-future-for-the-british-fishing-industry-on-stage You might also wonder why our beleaguered government wants to take such a stand on a sector that makes up just 0.1% of the UK economy much of which is in the hands of large business organizations especially as 80% of what UK ships catch is exported and thus particularly vulnerable to a WTO Brexit. There is also the issue over how long protection will last, maybe as little as 1-3 months, but I still feel it's a step in the right direction. Edit - 50% of people tested given placebo so 22,000. Few unanswered questions for sure but I feel some confidence is acceptable regarding this development. It is very positive and hopefully it can go someway to getting back to normality. This was one of my main concerns with people wanting to press the nuclear option regarding the elderly and vulnerable as early summer 2020 in lifting all restrictions and just letting the people most susceptible die out. Yes our life has been restricted but if normality does return within the next six months to a year, many of us (including me) will have seen it as a small price to pay for saving countless lives. the "kick the can" approach has been fully justified while we work on these vaccinations IMO. Let's hope it's a light at the end of the tunnel, many needless deaths avoided. A reserved amount of optimism from me 👍
