Has to be late 60s.  Probably 1966 (maybe earlier).  I cannae be arsed looking back at the pix on this thread which show the emerging Canal Street dual carriageway opening…  the garage opened almost synchronistically….
The wonderfully responsible person in that new garage (at the time) who collected payments, called the polis to attend a possible break-in at a 2nd floor flat in Sir Michael Place.  She’d seen someone climbing up the building’s gable end.
I opened the door to the polis.  I’d left my key indoors so climbed up the protruding bricks, then (the hard bit) got onto the kitchen windae ledge to let my self back in via that always opened windae.
Later, I went over to thank her for her public spirited call.

ps I’m not in my 50s…

Can't be 60s as the fire station is in the background and, according to Cookie's info, that only started being built in 1971.

Logical fallacy, Slarti.

What has the fire station date have to do with when the filling station was first built?

On reflection, I think it MUST have been built well before June 1970.

But I got the Glenburn Road bus thing well wrong, so I appreciate your scepticism.

The post you replied to was a reply to a post asking when the picture was taken. The fire station is in the picture so it must be, at the very earliest, August 1971 (when they started building it) but probably no earlier than 1972 as the building is roughcasted which would be one of the last things done.

Fairy nuff.  Mea culpa.

My inclusion of Cookie’s fire station post was redundant… other than to say I knew the petrol station existed pre 1972.

(also… I’d had a bucket of wine.  So, I'm otherwise pleased with the post.)

I don't usually post pictures that are out of my lifetime, this one just scrapes in, or triggers any memories for me but a few people might be familiar with this image.

Johnston Street
A cracking photo looking into Johnston Street from Gordon Street possibly early Sixties.
Mr & Mrs Elder owned the newsagents I believe and the Hairdressers was Charlie Galbraiths ,short back & sides, a specialty, then Catterson’s Restaurant for mince & tatties or steamed sausage ! !
The Hut in the bottom corner of picture was a Police Hut where the beat bobbies would have their breaks, during their shift.
Many thanks to Linda Halbert

Eddie
May be an image of 2 people and street

Was referred to as "cutthroat charlies" when I was a boy.

I remember getting my haircuts there as a schoolboy back the 1960s.

I remember having hair back then.

:(

When did it close. I feel like my old man would have taken me there as a kid if he went there but I have no memory of it.

I would guess Charlie Jnr sold it about 20 years ago There is still a Barbers at that spot today 💈

Was the place for a trendy cut in the early 60's.  Other shops took up the reins for the mod cuts and nobody bothered with barbers in the hippy days.

Like I said earlier in the thread, I can't think where we got our hair cut as kids, by the 80s I was growing mine very long so didn't bother so much and was in Dundee for much of that time, did get it cut in the one at the corner of Braids Road and Causeyside Street when I was back briefly in the mid 90s.

That would be the corner of Braids Rd and Neilston Rd. Still one there - called Get Your Domedone now.
