Gilmour Street It's not often a Bus comes along on the page but as is typical here's tthree at the one time !!. Cunninghams for Renfrew , a (real) McGills to Barrhead, and Western SMT to Braehead in Glenburn back in 1964. These old buses always bring to mind the 'Bus Runs' to Saltcoats or Ardrossan, usually organised as a Works 'Do' or by the local Tenants Association, happy days indeed !. Also of note is the wee peek through the Bridge and along New Sneddon Street showing the street before refurbishment of the Tudor Bar and the construction of the Health Clinic. I used to get the Bus home from Neilston Road to Foxbar and would see the McGills buses heading up To Auchenback .Always wondered where Auch was ? 🤔😉

Great photo, especially as it shows three of the bus companies that operated in Paisley more than 50 years ago. A pity there isn't a Graham's bus (St Mirren shirt sponsor in the 1980s) in the picture but perhaps none of their routes took them through Gilmour Street. Does anyone have any photos of a Paton's bus ? Luxury travel they were not !! All of their fleet were ancient second / third hand vehicles of a similar vintage to the McGill's bus pictured above. These vehicles are more modern than most of the Paton's buses I remember. That Scammell recovery truck in the photo was probably kept very busy. 😁

Parked up in the depot........... Above, empty, now, housing most people won't have seen...............

When I played amateur football in Paisley one of our trainers, John Steel, worked for Western....any time we were playing a big game away or going on a weekend "end of season" trip John organised us a bus departing from the depot. All the drivers seemed to know we were coming, who we were and wished us good luck on our travels........good memories!! antrin
My uncle worked in there as a mechanic. My only relative that didnae work in any of the mills. As a primary school kid when they asked what you wanted to be when you grew up, I wanted to be a mechanic. Then he drove the busses. I wanted to be a bus driver. Then he drove an ambulance. I wanted to be an ambulance driver. Finally, he joined Goudies and trained to become an undertaker. There were queues of people coming into our class to snigger at an innocent, curly, cute 8 year old declare his future ambition. I did drive busses… and still have his bus badge, somewhere…
