Onwards but not upwards for the rest of the season. Can't see us, realistically, finishing below 8th even though, mathematically, it's obviously still possible.

Oldfellow 228 Report post Posted March 20 Apart from Covid a lot of the breaks went our way this season eg lots of penalties, opposition players sent off, Danny Rogers giving us a goal. There weren't many games we won where we were clearly better . We have the makings of good side but we are not top six quality yet. Close season signings will be crucial . No individual games spring to mind that could have changed things . Probably the February draws killed us.
pondsman 485 Report post Posted March 20 Reasons for not making top 6 have been much discussed on the matchday thread for today's Accies game. Too many draws throughout the season which can be put down to loss of players through Covid and injury, especially Brophy, Dennis, Quaner. And McGrath, our best player over the season, out for a couple of weeks recently. Had these players been available I agree with JG that we could have had 5-6 more points by this time in the season. So, it has not really gone wrong. Despite the problems listed above, the club has made decent progress this season. We must now make sure that we get the 4 points required to ensure we don't finish eleventh. If we do that, JG must prove his worth by signing some better players in the summer so that we are ready to make a stronger challenge next season.

When these type of statements/excuses are rolled out it seems no other teams suffered from either of these issues. It's all part and parcel of a league campaign. Again, when I say it's all gone wrong I mean our attempts at reaching top 6, not the complete season as the season isn't finished yet.

What cost us was the four in a row home draws. Win one of them and we were almost certainly there. We didn't. We didn't set up with that mentality. We now need the manager to step up and get the team playing on the front foot to win one, just one game, in the next five to ensure we aren't dragged into any dog fight. Who would bet on us beating Dundee U, Motherwell, Ross County, Hamilton or a resurgent Kilmarnock?
munoz 8,776 Report post Posted March 20 Injuries to key players and too many games in a short period of time probably didn't help matters. Still, we have 40 pts with 15 still to play for.

truesaint 505 Report post Posted March 20 Tactics, set up and substitutions. The glaringly obvious has been about all season. 1) We can't defend a lead by becoming more defensive. 2) Our defence are decent at clearing balls and general defending but not so great when being put under pressure plays. 3) JDH is a decent player but would be be better playing in straight 4 along with McGrath. We have decent players who can play football but setting them up to defensively is an issue. The diamond worked at the start but grew predictable. 4) Our attack is poor without dennis and brophy and general hold up play isn't great. 5) The gaffer needs to go all out to win to become a winner. The best form of defence is attack or at least trying to keep the ball as far away from our goal as possible. 6) We don't score goals from high cross balls and don't think we have any player who is decent at heading a ball towards goal. 7) Better the wingers swap sides occasionally to cut in and get shots off. I am not overly disappointed but more frustrated that Jim still hasn't learned our best way to play and to stick with it.

I think, because Killie, County and Accies all play each other, we may be arithmetically safe already, we certainly dont need four points. Stupid thread IMO, it didnt go wrong, the club made progress this season as you said - we have to remember it was only four years since we almost got relegated to League One. The only disappointment is our chances of a fifth place finish and Europe are over. We'll just need to win the Cup to secure that. The season, sigh, isn't finished yet so it's a bit stupid to say we've made progress at this stage. Us winning the cup is really stupid as I assume you haven't watched us over the last 11 games where we've managed ONE win?

No, there are still a number of scenarios that could leave in the play off spot, albeit on goal difference. These are highly unlikely, but still possible nevertheless. It is St Mirren after all.
