MarkL
From the Daily Ranger St Mirren chiefs are set to rename their home ground ‘Paisley Stadium’ in a bid to net the town a prestigious title. Club bosses are about to rubber-stamp a £66,000 two-year sponsorship deal with Renfrewshire Council as part of the UK City of Culture in 2021 campaign. St Mirren chiefs are set to rename their home ground ‘Paisley Stadium’ in a bid to net the town a prestigious title. Club bosses are about to rubber-stamp a £66,000 two-year sponsorship deal with Renfrewshire Council as part of the UK City of Culture in 2021 campaign. The proposed new name was being kept under wraps last night, but the Paisley Daily Express understands that St Mirren Park will be rebranded Paisley Stadium, or Paisley 2012 Stadium, for two years. And if the local authority lands the honour of becoming the UK City of Culture in 2021, Saints chiefs hope the deal will be extended. St Mirren chief executive Brian Caldwell said: “St Mirren FC is proud of its roots in Paisley’s history, dating back to the founding of the club in the town in 1877. “These proposals would see our stadium playing a key part of the City of Culture campaign and I am certain that our fans will get right behind it.” The proposed sponsorship deal will be put before councillors for approval on Wednesday. If, as expected, it gets the green light, St Mirren Park, in Greenhill Road, will be renamed to support Paisley’s campaign in the lead-up to the announcement of the winning culture bid in 2017. Councillor Mark Macmillan, leader of Renfrewshire Council, said: “We are delighted to have the support of St Mirren for our bid to bring the UK City of Culture title to Paisley in 2021. “The club is part of the bedrock of the town’s history and an essential part of the cultural life of the town and its people. “We have had marvellous response already to our bid launch a wide range of local people and organisations.” The proposed package also includes Paisley UK City of Culture 2021 advertising and branding inside the stadium and on the club’s digital media channels. Paisley’s bid for the UK City of Culture title is part of ambitious plans to use the town’s internationally-significant heritage and cultural assets to transform its future. Paisley 2021 Stadium......knowing our luck some numbers will fall prey to the wind and drop off over time without being repaired thereby becoming the Paisley 0 Stadium It's already f**ked, if you read the quote above. bluto
Yes, did something of significance happen in 2012 that we are not aware of ?Perhaps they put a sign up to that effect three years, ago...... and then maybe some Celtic signage accidentally covered it up? :

David Mc
A very acceptable name change i reckon. It looks like a fair swop. Change the name of stadium in exchange for severance pay for the manager.
pozbaird
£66,000 sponsorship deal to re-brand the stadium? Make it £66,250 and maybe someone in the Paisley 2021 bid team could also re-brand the existing Hall of Fame panels to include Van Zanten, Basher & Rankin.... Sometime this century would be nice. pozbaird
When did we become a city? You don't need to be a city to apply.
FTOF
Don't see why not. We'll get some money out of it too. Although most people will probably call it what they want, like they do at present.
E=Mc2
You don't need to be a city to apply. Then they should change it to "Centre of Culture" or "Cultural Centre". This will confuse the weans when we aulds yins tell them how proud we are that Scotland's largest town is a city of culture.
TopCat
I like it. Guess the council are paying for it as sponsorship, bit of extra money which is all good. Also it's not a sell out like the Tony Macaroni arena, for example.
