I saw Dougie Somner mentioned in another post and it came to mind that of all our signings over the years he surprised me the most - not because he could find the net, but that he found it with such regularity! :)

A lot of players that I had never heard of before they came to us........and turned out to be fantastic signings.

These would have to be the 2 stand outs for me though.

Torfason

Dorman

Gudmunder Torfason

And while I was often pleased with Thomas Stickroth, I was surprised that he didn't do better-he certainly had some great attributes

Most of the players were surprised when they checked their pockets after Jens Paeslack signed.

Jim Blair for me, I had never seen anyone before with such ball control skills. I think he may have come from the juniors also, wouldn't swear to it though...........long time ago.

Mark Yardley for me. Hit the ground running and never looked back. Gunni Torfason, as I’d never heard of him until he signed and was a brilliant piece of business

Ye big Mark for me too, thought we had signed Tiny Wharton when i first saw him

Most of Fergie's Furies

Hunter Beckett Young Copland Richardson Stark Fitzpatrick McGarvey Hyslop McDowell all unknown till they starred for Saints

And more in the coming years such as MacDougall MacAveenie Weir Somner Clark Wilson Ferguson etc.

Great days to be a Buddie!!

PS Have you noticed that for about 10 years Saints main striker was Frankie Mac - McGarvey, MacDougall  MacAvennie and McGarvey again!!😎

McGarvey as well. He was signed from Kilsyth Rangers. Imagine the meltdown if we signed a player from The Juniors nowadays

Fergie practically built a team from junior clubs.

Craig Samson is definitely up there, low key signing at the time as a backup keeper, not highly rated, yet he became an absolute legend, league and cup winner and penalty hero. Andy Dorman as well. I'd never heard of him, came from the American league, yet was a brilliant player for us. Conor Newton is another candidate, especially after his honking debut.

Overall though, I think I'd go with Yardley.

Lot of players mentioned were signed for decent money

Others were unknown as they came from juniors and i don't class as them as signings

Those days it was more or less your pro youth (Notice a better standard of player came through)

So Billy Thompson and Tommy Wilson for me with a mention to Big Yardley

Second thoughts just read the orginal post

McGarvey and Bone

Wee Frank could have spat the dummy and played out his days but was a big part in our cup winning team

Bone could be argued had his best days with us i think we should have kept him for couple seasons after we released him
